Upload a PDF to get started

Upload a PDF file to begin annotations stripping.

Why Use Remove Annotations?

Selective Stripping

Choose exactly which annotation subtypes to delete (notes, drawings, stamps, forms, or links) rather than wiping all layers.

Page Scope Control

Clean the entire PDF document at once or select specific pages to target for annotation removal.

Private & Browser-Based

File processing happens purely inside your web browser. No document uploads, ensuring your private data stays safe.

Clean Vector Structure

Permanently deletes PDF dictionary objects. Reduces file clutter without converting vector text layers to rasterized images.

Common Use Cases

1

Sanitizing Reviews for Final Release

Remove editorial suggestions, sticky notes, highlights, and internal feedback annotations before sharing the final draft with clients or publishing it online.

2

Clearing Study Notes and Markups

Strip student highlights, underlines, and hand-drawn annotations from academic textbooks, lecture slides, or journal articles to get a clean document for re-reading.

3

Preparing Legal and Public Submissions

Sanitize litigation files or municipal filings to completely remove confidential draft annotations, reviewer comments, and private metadata.

4

Resetting Form Templates

Delete filled-out form field annotations, digital checkmarks, or draft text widget layers to restore a template PDF back to its original blank state.

5

Removing Watermarks and Stamp Signatures

Clear `/Stamp` annotations (such as 'APPROVED', 'DRAFT', or company logo overlays) that were added to the document page as annotation objects.

6

Optimizing File Size and Rendering speed

Remove complex drawing markups or thousands of highlight notes that can cause mobile PDF viewers and e-readers to lag during page rendering.

About Remove Annotations

What is a PDF annotation?

PDF annotations are layer overlays added to a document. They include reviewer comments, sticky notes, text markups (like highlights, underlines, and strikethroughs), freehand ink drawings, geometric shapes, stamps, hyperlinks, and form fields.

How selective stripping works

Unlike tools that wipe all page overlays indiscriminately, this tool parses the internal `/Annots` dictionary tree for each page. It reads the `/Subtype` of each overlay object and deletes only the categories you select, leaving other functions untouched.

Sanitizing documents for publication

Before sharing files publicly or submitting legal briefs, it is critical to strip reviewer discussion notes, internal feedback, and draft markers. Removing annotations prevents readers from viewing hidden markups and edit history.

Preserving active features

You can choose to delete comments, drawings, and stamps while preserving active hyperlinks (`/Link` subtype) and form fields (`/Widget` subtype). This ensures your document remains interactive and fillable while being cleaned.

Privacy-first client processing

The stripping process runs entirely in your local web browser session. No data is transmitted to external servers. Your sensitive corporate documents, contracts, and personal records remain private and secure on your own machine.

Difference from flattening

Flattening merges annotations into the background page canvas as static shapes/text. Removing annotations completely deletes the annotation object definition from the file, resulting in a cleaner structure and often reducing the file size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Unlike rasterization or printing-to-PDF methods that convert pages to images, this tool acts directly on the PDF structure. It deletes the specified annotation objects while leaving the native vector text and font layers completely untouched. Your text remains 100% searchable, selectable, and high-resolution.

Removing annotations deletes the overlay object definitions completely from the file. Flattening rasterizes or merges those overlays into the background page so they become permanent visible graphics. Removing annotations is ideal for erasing confidential comments and suggetions, while flattening is ideal for locking sign-offs in place.

By default, no. Form fields and check boxes are classified as "/Widget" annotations. If you want to keep your form fields clickable and fillable, leave the "Remove Form Fields & Interactive Widgets" setting unchecked. If you want to strip all form data, check this option.

Only if you select that option. Links in a PDF are stored as "/Link" annotations. We keep "Remove Hyperlinks" unchecked by default so that web URLs and internal document page jumps continue to function. If you want to strip all links for compliance, check the box.

Yes. In line with our security standards, all file loading, dictionary parsing, and annotation removal are performed client-side using JavaScript in your browser. No files are uploaded to our servers, keeping your confidential records protected.

Yes. You can toggle the scope option between "All Pages" and "Selected Pages". Choosing "Selected Pages" displays an interactive thumbnail preview where you can click to select exactly which pages you want to strip annotations from.
