Redact PDF Tool

Censor and hide sensitive information in your PDF files. Choose your color, click and drag to draw redaction boxes, and choose secure flattening to permanently erase underlying data.

Why Use Our Redact PDF Tool?

Interactive Visual Drawing

Click and drag directly on the page preview to cover sensitive text or graphics. Add as many redaction rectangles as you need across different pages.

Secure Flattening Mode

Burn redactions directly into the page pixels by rasterizing them. This destroys the underlying vector text stream so it is 100% unrecoverable.

Multiple Censor Colors

Choose from Black (default for standard censoring), White (clean hiding of page elements), Red (draft markups), or Gray.

Complete Local Privacy

All PDF rendering, editing, and flattening run completely in your web browser. No document files or sensitive content are ever sent to a server.

How To Redact Your PDF

1

Upload Your PDF Document

Drag and drop your PDF file or click inside the upload box to browse your files. The document renders directly in your browser's local sandbox, keeping all content private.

2

Choose a Redaction Color

Select your preferred censor fill color from the settings panel. Black is the industry standard, but you can also choose white, red, or gray to suit different layout and document types.

3

Draw Redaction Boxes

Navigate to any page in the document using the sidebar. Click and drag your cursor over the text, numbers, or images you want to censor. The cover box will appear instantly.

4

Select Processing Mode

Choose 'Secure Flattening' (recommended) to convert your PDF pages to static images, permanently burning out censored text. Choose 'Vector Overlay' if you want to keep other text selectable.

5

Review and Edit Censor Boxes

Check the list of active redactions in the settings sidebar. Review your placements page by page. If you make a mistake, simply click the trash icon next to a box description to remove it.

6

Apply and Download Redacted PDF

Click the 'Apply Redactions' button. The tool processes the document and automatically starts the file download. Save your secure, sanitized PDF to your computer.

About Redact PDF Tool

What is PDF Redaction?

PDF Redaction is the process of permanently deleting or masking sensitive, private, or classified information from a PDF document. Unlike simply coloring text black in a word processor, proper PDF redaction ensures that the hidden text, metadata, and underlying objects are completely removed from the file structure, preventing unauthorized recovery.

Secure Flattening vs. Vector Overlays

Our tool offers two redaction methods. Secure Flattening (Recommended) renders each page of your PDF into high-resolution images, draws the redaction boxes over the pixels, and compiles them back into a new PDF. This completely destroys the underlying text stream. Vector Overlays, on the other hand, draw colored rectangles directly onto the existing PDF vector structure. While faster, the underlying text remains in the file stream and could be extracted by specialized inspection tools.

Protecting Your Privacy

Sensitive information includes Social Security Numbers (SSNs), passwords, financial details, credit card numbers, personal addresses, medical records, or confidential corporate data. Redacting these details before sharing contracts, resumes, or public records is critical for compliance and security.

100% Client-Side Processing

Data privacy is our top priority. The Redact PDF tool runs entirely within your web browser. Your files, documents, and drawing actions are never uploaded to any external server or processed remotely. All operations are performed locally on your device, ensuring absolute confidentiality.

Custom Redaction Colors

While solid black is the industry standard for censor boxes, you can also select white, red, or gray redaction rectangles. White is perfect for cleanly hiding headers, page numbers, or footers. Red is ideal for draft corrections, and gray provides a neutral mask.

Preserving PDF Layout

Redaction applies cover shapes to selected areas without affecting the alignment, spacing, or margins of the rest of the document. When using vector mode, all other text remains fully selectable and searchable. When using secure flattening, pages become high-quality images, preserving the exact visual layout.

Completely Free to Use

Enjoy unlimited use of the Redact PDF tool without any hidden costs, trial limits, or account registration requirements. Process large documents, multi-page PDFs, and complex files with no limits, completely free of charge.

Simple and Interactive Editor

Our interface is designed for simplicity. Upload a PDF, navigate pages using the sidebar, and click-and-drag to draw cover shapes instantly. If you make a mistake, you can remove individual boxes using the active redactions tracker before generating the final output.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Redact PDF tool allows you to permanently remove or cover sensitive data inside PDF files by drawing custom redaction boxes. It supports custom colors and secure processing to ensure your data stays private and cannot be retrieved.

Secure Flattening renders all pages of the PDF as images and draws the redact rectangles directly onto the pixels. Because the output pages are rasterized images rather than vector text layouts, the underlying text characters are completely gone. No one can search, copy, or extract the redacted text—even with advanced PDF scanners.

Vector Overlay mode simply draws solid rectangles on top of the original text. While it hides the information visually, the raw text characters are still stored in the PDF file stream underneath the shape. A tech-savvy user could extract the text by copying it or using an inspector. We recommend Secure Flattening for all highly sensitive redactions.
