Understanding the Budget Planner
How the budget planner works and how to use it to manage your finances
What is a Budget Planner?
A budget planner is a financial tool that helps you track your income and expenses to understand where your money goes each month. By categorising every income source and expense, a budget planner gives you a clear picture of your cash flow — the difference between what you earn and what you spend. Our budget planner runs entirely in your browser and calculates your total income, total expenses, balance, and savings rate in real time as you enter data. Interactive donut charts show the breakdown of your income sources and expense categories visually, making it easy to spot where your money is going at a glance. No account, no server, no data collection — your financial data stays completely private on your device.
How Our Budget Planner Works
- Add Your Income:Click "Add income" in the Income section and enter each income source with a description, category (Salary, Freelance, Investments, etc.), and monthly amount. The budget planner supports multiple income sources simultaneously.
- Add Your Expenses:Click "Add expense" in the Expenses section and enter each expense with a description, category (Housing, Food, Transport, etc.), and monthly amount. The budget planner groups expenses by category automatically in the breakdown chart.
- Review Your Budget Breakdown: The summary bar at the top shows your total income, total expenses, balance, and savings rate instantly. The donut charts and category breakdown table update in real time as you add or change entries. Use the balance insight at the bottom for a plain-English summary of your financial position.
What the Budget Planner Calculates
- Total Income: The sum of all income entries, shown in the summary bar and the income donut chart with a breakdown by income category.
- Total Expenses: The sum of all expense entries, shown in the summary bar and the expense donut chart with a breakdown by expense category.
- Balance: Total income minus total expenses. A positive balance means you have a surplus; a negative balance means you are spending more than you earn. The balance card turns red when negative.
- Savings Rate:The percentage of your income that remains after expenses (balance ÷ income × 100). Financial experts generally recommend a savings rate of at least 20%. The budget planner colour-codes this metric green (≥20%), yellow (10–19%), or red (<10%).
Tips for Effective Budget Planning
The most effective budget plans are based on actual spending data rather than estimates. Before using the budget planner, review your last 3 months of bank statements to get accurate average amounts for each expense category. Use the 50/30/20 rule as a starting point: 50% of income on needs (housing, food, utilities), 30% on wants (entertainment, dining out, subscriptions), and 20% on savings and debt repayment. If your budget planner shows a negative balance, start by reviewing your largest expense categories — small reductions in high-cost categories have a bigger impact than eliminating small expenses. Revisit your budget planner at the start of each month to update amounts and track whether your spending patterns are improving over time.
