Features
Invisible Zero-Width Fingerprint Embedding
Embed hidden fingerprint messages into any text using zero-width Unicode characters (ZWSP U+200B, ZWJ U+200D, ZWNBSP U+FEFF, ZWNJ U+200C). The fingerprint is completely invisible when rendered in browsers, editors, and messengers — the text looks identical to the original but carries a recoverable hidden payload.
Unique Copy Tracking with Metadata
Assign unique numeric copy IDs (0-9999) to each watermarked copy, enabling leak source tracing. The payload can also include document names and recipient identifiers. When a watermarked document is leaked, extracting the fingerprint reveals which copy was the source, making this a powerful tool for insider threat detection.
Fingerprint Extraction & Forensic Analysis
Analyze suspicious text for hidden fingerprint watermarks. The detector scans for zero-width characters, extracts embedded secrets, decodes metadata (copy IDs, document names, recipients), and generates a visual breakdown of all hidden characters found. Includes a text cleaner that strips all invisible watermarks.
100% Browser-Local & Private
All fingerprint embedding, extraction, and analysis runs entirely in your browser. Your text, secrets, and all results never leave your device. No server uploads, no API calls, no data storage, and no tracking. Completely safe for watermarking sensitive documents with confidential tracking information.
Use Cases
Leak Source Identification & Insider Threat Detection
Assign unique fingerprint IDs to each copy of a confidential document distributed to employees, contractors, or partners. When a document is leaked online, extract the watermark to identify which recipient was the source. Each copy carries a unique ID that can be traced back to the individual who received it.
Document Forensics & Copyright Enforcement
Protect intellectual property by embedding invisible watermarks in published documents, articles, and whitepapers. Even if the visible content is copied and republished, the embedded fingerprint remains and can be extracted as evidence of the original source, helping enforce copyright claims and content attribution.
Confidential Report Distribution Tracking
When distributing sensitive reports to different departments or external stakeholders, embed unique fingerprints in each copy. Track who received which version, detect unauthorized sharing between recipients, and verify that documents are only being used by their intended audience.
Proprietary Source Code & Data Leak Protection
Embed invisible watermarks in source code snippets, configuration files, or API documentation shared with third parties. Each recipient gets a uniquely fingerprinted version. If the code appears online or in competing products, the watermark reveals which partner or contractor was responsible for the leak.
Educational Tool for Steganography Awareness
Learn how zero-width character steganography works in practice. Embed and extract hidden messages, experiment with different payload sizes, and understand the overhead trade-offs. See exactly how invisible characters can carry data within seemingly normal text — a key technique in both security and privacy.
Journalist & Whistleblower Source Protection
Journalists can embed unique fingerprints in documents shared with sources to detect leaks or verify authenticity. Conversely, whistleblowers can check documents they receive for hidden tracking watermarks before sharing sensitive information, protecting their identity from forensic document tracing.
About Text Fingerprint Watermarking
What is Text Fingerprint Watermarking?
Text fingerprint watermarking is a steganographic technique that embeds invisible, unique identifiers into text documents using zero-width Unicode characters. Unlike visible watermarks or metadata that can be easily stripped, zero-width characters (ZWSP U+200B, ZWJ U+200D, ZWNBSP U+FEFF, ZWNJ U+200C) are completely invisible when rendered by browsers, text editors, word processors, and messaging applications. The text appears identical to the original, yet carries a hidden payload that can include unique copy IDs, recipient names, document identifiers, and arbitrary secret messages. This technique is widely used for document tracking, leak source identification, copyright enforcement, and forensic tracing of confidential documents.
How Our Text Fingerprint Injector Works
The Text Fingerprint Watermark Injector uses a binary encoding scheme built on zero-width characters. Each character of the fingerprint message is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, then converted to a sequence of 8 zero-width characters: Zero-Width Space (U+200B) represents binary 0, and Zero-Width Joiner (U+200D) represents binary 1. A Zero-Width No-Break Space (U+FEFF) marks the start of the encoded data, and a Zero-Width Non-Joiner (U+200C) marks the end. The encoded payload is appended to the end of the cover text (or optionally positioned elsewhere). For tracking purposes, the tool can include metadata in the payload: a unique copy ID (0-9999), the document name, and the recipient identifier. The injector and extractor support the full round-trip: embed a fingerprint, distribute the text, then extract and decode the hidden information from any copy. All processing is local and private.
Limitations & Considerations
This watermarking technique has important limitations. Zero-width characters can be stripped by certain text processing pipelines, including some sanitizers, HTML editors, and content management systems that filter Unicode characters. Copying text through certain applications (like terminal emulators or some mobile apps) may strip or alter the invisible characters. The watermark does not survive OCR (optical character recognition) or manual retyping of the document. For high-security applications, consider combining zero-width watermarks with visible watermarks, metadata embedding, and access logging. The robustness of the watermark depends on the payload size — larger payloads mean more overhead and higher detectability. Always verify that the fingerprint survives the specific distribution channel before relying on it for leak tracing.
Privacy & Security
This tool runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. The cover text, fingerprint message, copy IDs, and all embedding/extraction results are never uploaded to any server, stored in any database, or transmitted over the network. All encoding, decoding, and analysis execute locally on your device. There are no API calls, analytics tracking, cookies, or data collection of any kind. This makes it completely safe for watermarking sensitive documents with confidential tracking information, proprietary source code, or private communications where the fingerprint content itself must remain secret.

Frequently Asked Questions About Text Fingerprint Watermarking
Zero-width characters are Unicode code points that take up no visible space when rendered by text engines. Characters like Zero-Width Space (U+200B) and Zero-Width Joiner (U+200D) are invisible in browsers, text editors, and most applications. By encoding binary data as sequences of different zero-width characters (e.g., ZWSP = 0, ZWJ = 1), we can embed arbitrary messages into text without changing its visible appearance. A start marker (U+FEFF) and end marker (U+200C) delimit the hidden data, allowing precise extraction.
Unlike visible watermarks or file metadata (EXIF, author fields) that can be easily seen or stripped, zero-width watermarks are invisible during normal use and survive copy-paste between most applications. Unlike image or audio steganography that requires specific file formats, text fingerprinting works with plain text — emails, documents, source code, config files, and messages. The hidden data travels with the text itself, not in separate metadata fields that can be removed.
Yes, zero-width watermarks can be removed by text sanitizers, some CMS platforms, and applications that filter Unicode characters. They can be detected by specialized tools (like the Extract & Detect mode of this tool) that scan for hidden characters. Manual retyping, OCR, and copying through certain terminals will also strip the watermark. The technique is best used as a forensic tool — it provides plausible deniability and traceability but should not be relied upon as the sole security measure for highly sensitive documents.
Each character of the fingerprint message requires 8 zero-width characters (1 byte = 8 bits). Plus, the start marker (U+FEFF) and end marker (U+200C) add 2 more invisible characters. So a 10-character secret adds 82 invisible characters overhead. For tracking purposes, additional metadata (copy ID, document name, recipient) adds to the payload size. The overhead is invisible to users and does not affect the visible text appearance.
The copy ID lets you assign a unique number (0-9999) to each watermarked copy of a document. When distributing a confidential report to 20 team members, you would give each person a copy with a different ID embedded. If the document is leaked online, extracting the watermark reveals which copy ID was the source, allowing you to trace the leak back to the specific recipient. This is a powerful tool for insider threat detection and document access auditing.
Yes, the Extract & Detect mode can analyze any text for zero-width watermark patterns, regardless of which tool created them. It uses the same binary encoding scheme with standard markers to detect and decode hidden content. If the hidden data follows the fingerprint metadata format (with FPv2:, COPY:, DOC:, TO: markers), it will also extract the copy ID, document name, and recipient information if embedded.
Absolutely. The Text Fingerprint Watermark Injector runs entirely in your browser. Your cover text, fingerprint secrets, copy IDs, and all embedding/extraction results are never uploaded to any server, stored in any database, or transmitted over the network. Generally yes — most modern communication platforms preserve zero-width characters when transmitting text. Email (HTML and plain text), Slack, Teams, Discord, WhatsApp, and most web-based messaging apps preserve Unicode characters including zero-width spaces. However, some platforms may strip or alter these characters during processing. Always test your specific distribution channel by embedding a fingerprint, sending it through the channel, then extracting it on the receiving end before relying on the watermark for tracking.
