QR Code Data Hider

Generate QR codes with hidden secret messages embedded inside them using LSB steganography. The QR code still scans to its original URL or text, but only those who know about the hidden data can extract the secret message. Extract hidden messages from QR code images by uploading them here.

The message is hidden in the QR code pixels using LSB steganography. The QR code still scans to its visible content. Max message size depends on QR code version and error correction level.

Enter a URL or text for the QR code and a secret message to hide. Click Generate QR with Hidden Data to create a QR code that scans normally but contains hidden LSB-encoded data in its pixels. Switch to Extract Hidden Data mode to decode hidden messages from existing QR code images.

Note:This tool uses LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography to embed secret messages inside QR code images. The hidden data does not affect the QR code's scannability — it will still decode to its original URL or text with any standard QR scanner. The steganography modifies only the least significant bits of each pixel, making the changes visually imperceptible. Uses error correction level H (highest) for maximum data capacity. All processing is local in your browser.

Common Use Cases for QR Code Steganography

Dual-Purpose Product QR Codes

Product packaging QR codes that scan to the product page or manual, but also contain hidden supply chain data like batch number, manufacturing date, or authenticity markers. Customers see the standard content, while authorized personnel can extract the hidden tracking data using the Extract mode. Provides tamper-evident product authentication without visible markings.

Secure Event Ticketing & Access Control

Generate event tickets with QR codes that contain hidden attendee identifiers, ticket validation codes, or access level information. The visible QR content shows the event URL, while the hidden steganographic data carries cryptographically signed validation tokens. Prevent ticket forgery and enable offline verification at venue entry points.

Marketing Campaign Attribution Codes

Embed campaign attribution data, affiliate IDs, or tracking codes inside promotional QR codes used in print ads, billboards, and flyers. The QR code scans to the campaign landing page as usual, but the hidden data contains the specific campaign ID, print run number, and placement location for granular offline-to-online attribution.

Hidden Messages in Gift & Greeting Cards

Create personalized QR codes for greeting cards, gift tags, or invitations that contain hidden messages in addition to the visible content. The QR code scans to a photo gallery or event page, while the hidden steganographic data carries a personal message from the sender — invisible to anyone who does not know to extract it.

Document & Certificate Verification

Embed verification credentials inside QR codes printed on certificates, diplomas, or official documents. The QR code scans to the issuing organization's verification page, while the hidden data contains cryptographic hashes, document IDs, and issuer signatures that can be extracted for automated verification without an online lookup.

Covert Communication & Steganographic Messaging

Use QR code steganography for covert communication where the visible QR content serves as innocent-looking cover (a URL, business card, or WiFi credentials) while the actual message is hidden in the pixel data. Only recipients who know to use the Extract mode can reveal the true message. Ideal for privacy-sensitive communications.

Understanding QR Code Data Hiding

What Is QR Code Steganography?

QR code steganographyis the practice of hiding a secret message inside a QR code image in such a way that the QR code remains fully functional — it still scans to its intended URL or text content. The hidden data is embedded in the least significant bits (LSBs) of the QR code's pixel values, making it visually imperceptible to the human eye while carrying additional information that can be extracted by specialized software.

Unlike conventional QR codes that carry only the visible encoded data, a steganographic QR code serves dual purposes: it works as a normal QR code for everyday use (scanning, sharing, printing) while simultaneously acting as a carrier for hidden data that only intended recipients can access. This is achieved without changing the QR code's functional modules — the hidden data resides in the image pixels, not in the QR code's data codewords.

How Our QR Code Data Hider Works

  1. 1. Generate the QR Code: The tool takes your visible content (URL or text) and generates a standard QR code using the qrcode library with error correction level H (the highest level, ~30% redundancy). The QR code is rendered onto a canvas at 400x400 pixels with full module data intact. This QR code will scan correctly with any standard QR scanner app or library.
  2. 2. Embed the Hidden Message: The tool extracts the pixel data from the QR code canvas image. It then embeds your secret message using LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography: each bit of the message (plus a 4-byte length prefix) is stored in the least significant bit of successive pixel color channels. This modifies each pixel's value by at most 1 out of 256 — a change that is imperceptible to the human eye but carries one bit of hidden data per byte.
  3. 3. Extract the Hidden Data: In Extract mode, the tool reads the pixel data from an uploaded QR code image. It extracts the LSB from each pixel channel in order, reconstructs the 4-byte length prefix, then reads that many bytes to recover the original secret message. If no hidden data is detected or the data is corrupted, the tool reports a clear error message.

QR Code Steganography Properties & Limitations

  • Lossless Preservation:The QR code's functional modules (finder patterns, alignment patterns, timing patterns, data codewords) are not altered. The hidden data is stored in the pixel representation, not in the QR code's data stream. This means any standard QR scanner will decode the visible content correctly.
  • Data Capacity: A 400x400 QR code image has 480,000 bytes of pixel data (400 × 400 × 3 channels for RGB). Using 1 bit per byte for LSB steganography, the maximum hidden message size is approximately 60,000 bytes (roughly 60,000 characters). Error correction level H provides more room for embedding compared to lower levels because the additional modules increase pixel count.
  • Visual Imperceptibility: Each pixel value changes by at most 1 (out of 256). This is the smallest possible change and is not perceptible to the human eye, even when comparing the original and modified images side by side. The QR code appears identical to an unmodified version.
  • Format Sensitivity: LSB steganography is sensitive to lossy compression. Saving or sharing the QR code as JPEG will destroy the hidden data. Always use PNG (lossless) format to preserve the embedded message. Our tool outputs PNG files by default.
  • Not Encryption: LSB steganography is a form of security through obscurity — the hidden data is concealed, not encrypted. Anyone who knows the extraction method can read the hidden message. For sensitive data, encrypt the message before embedding it.
  • Capacity vs QR Version: Larger QR code versions (more modules) produce larger images with more pixels, which increases the capacity for hidden data. Our tool uses a 400x400 canvas which accommodates most QR versions up to version 25+.

Frequently Asked Questions About QR Code Data Hiding

QR code steganography is the practice of hiding secret messages inside QR code images without affecting their normal functionality. The QR code still scans to its original URL or text content using any standard QR scanner, but additional data is embedded in the least significant bits (LSBs) of the pixel values. This hidden data is visually imperceptible and can only be extracted by specialized software that knows how to read the LSB modifications.

In Embed mode: enter the visible QR code content (URL or text), enter your secret message, and click "Generate QR with Hidden Data". Download the resulting PNG image. In Extract mode: switch to Extract mode, then drag and drop a QR code image or click to browse. The tool will scan the pixel data and extract any hidden LSB-steganographic message. The visible QR content remains scannable throughout.

Yes — absolutely. The hidden data is embedded in the image pixels using LSB steganography, not in the QR code's functional data modules. The QR code's finder patterns, alignment patterns, timing patterns, and data codewords are completely untouched. Any standard QR scanner app, camera app with QR support, or QR library will decode the visible content exactly as intended. The hidden data is invisible to standard scanners.

A 400x400 pixel QR code image has approximately 480,000 bytes of pixel data (400 × 400 × 3 RGB channels). Using 1 bit per byte for LSB embedding, the maximum hidden message size is about 60,000 bytes (60,000 characters). The actual usable capacity is slightly less due to the 4-byte length prefix. Larger QR versions with more modules provide more capacity, while smaller versions provide less.

JPEG uses lossy compression which modifies pixel values and will destroy the LSB-embedded hidden data. You must save the QR code as PNG (lossless) to preserve the hidden message. Our tool outputs PNG by default. If you need to share the QR code on social media or messaging apps, ensure they do not re-encode the image as JPEG. Always verify extraction before discarding the original.

LSB steganography is designed to be visually undetectable. Each pixel value changes by at most 1 out of 256, which is imperceptible to the human eye. However, statistical analysis (like chi-square attacks on LSB distributions) can detect the presence of hidden data in some cases. If you need to hide the fact that data is hidden at all, consider using encryption and more sophisticated steganography techniques.

No — LSB steganography conceals data, it does not encrypt it. Anyone who knows the extraction method (reading LSBs from pixel data) can read the hidden message. If you need confidentiality, encrypt your message before embedding it using a separate encryption tool (like our AES Encryptor) and embed the encrypted ciphertext. This provides both concealment (steganography) and security (encryption).

The extraction mode supports any image format that the browser can render, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. However, hidden data can only be reliably extracted from PNG images because lossy formats like JPEG destroy LSB data. If you upload a JPEG that previously had hidden data, the extraction will likely fail. The tool will report "No hidden message found" if it cannot detect valid embedded data.

Yes — 100% free with no signup, no account, and no usage limits. Generate as many hidden-data QR codes as you need and extract as many images as you want.
