Transparent PNG Compressor

Transparent PNG compression is the process of reducing the file size of PNG images that contain an alpha channel — the fourth channel that controls pixel transparency — while keeping the visible image and all transparency data completely intact. Standard PNG compressors re-encode the pixel data at a higher DEFLATE compression level, but our transparent PNG compressor goes further: it removes redundant alpha data (RGB values stored in fully-transparent pixels that are never displayed) and optionally thresholds near-transparent edge pixels, both of which reduce file entropy and improve compression ratios significantly.

1. 1Upload your transparent PNG files: Drag and drop or click to browse. The tool accepts any PNG file — it automatically detects whether the image has an alpha channel and shows the percentage of transparent pixels.
2. 2Configure compression settings: Set the quality level (80–90% recommended), enable redundant alpha optimisation (zeroes out RGB values of invisible pixels), and optionally set an alpha threshold to make near-transparent edge pixels fully transparent. All processing happens locally in your browser — your images never leave your device.
3. 3Download compressed transparent PNGs: Click "Compress All". Each image shows the size reduction percentage and transparency stats. Use the comparison viewer to verify the output on a checkerboard background, then download individually or as a ZIP archive.

• Redundant Alpha Removal: Fully-transparent pixels (alpha = 0) often contain non-zero RGB values from the original image. These values are invisible but inflate file entropy. Zeroing them out reduces DEFLATE compression size without any visible change.
• Alpha Threshold Cleaning: Near-transparent edge pixels (e.g. alpha ≤ 10) are often compression artefacts or anti-aliasing remnants. Setting a threshold makes them fully transparent, reducing the number of unique alpha values and improving compression.
• DEFLATE Re-encoding:The pixel data is re-encoded at a higher compression level using the browser's native PNG encoder, reducing the raw byte count of the file.
• Metadata Stripping: Unnecessary PNG chunks (text annotations, creation timestamps, software tags, ICC profiles) are removed during canvas re-encoding, further reducing file size.

The alpha threshold setting should be used carefully for images with intentional semi-transparency (e.g. drop shadows, frosted glass effects, smooth gradients to transparent). A threshold of 0–5 is safe for most logos and icons. Higher thresholds (10–30) are useful for removing anti-aliasing artefacts on hard-edged graphics but may affect soft shadows. Always use the comparison viewer on a checkerboard background to verify the output before downloading.
