Understanding the World Clock Dashboard

What is a World Clock Dashboard?

A world clock dashboard is a tool that displays the current time for multiple cities and timezones simultaneously, making it easy to track time across different regions at a glance. Our world clock dashboard goes beyond simple time display - each city card features a live analog clock face with hour, minute, and second hands, alongside the digital time, date, AM/PM indicator, and UTC offset. The dashboard updates every second in real-time, and clock faces automatically reflect whether it is day or night in each location.

How Our World Clock Dashboard Works

  1. Start with default cities: When you first open the dashboard, it displays nine major cities covering all inhabited continents - New York, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Los Angeles, Dubai, Berlin, Singapore, and Mumbai. Each city card shows a live analog clock and digital time display.
  2. Add more timezones:Click the "Add Timezone" button to open the search panel. Browse or search from 40+ timezones organised by region. Click any timezone entry to add it to your dashboard. The search supports city names, country names, region names, and timezone IDs.
  3. Customise your layout:Drag any city card by its grip handle (visible on hover) to reorder the cards. Hover over a card to reveal the remove button - click it to remove a city from your dashboard. Your complete city selection and ordering is automatically saved in your browser's localStorage and restored on your next visit.

Features of the World Clock Dashboard

  • Live analog clock faces: Each city card includes a canvas-drawn analog clock with hour, minute, and second hands that update every second. The clock face automatically switches between light and dark themes based on whether it is daytime or nighttime in that city.
  • Digital time & date display:In addition to the analog clock, each card shows the current time in 24-hour format, AM/PM indicator, day description (e.g., "Mon, Jan 15"), and UTC offset.
  • Time difference indicator:Each city card shows how far ahead or behind it is from your local time, with labels like "5h ahead" or "3h 30m behind". Cities in your own timezone show "Same time".
  • Day/Night status badge: A colour-coded badge indicates whether it is currently day (amber) or night (indigo) in each city, with a matching coloured dot indicator.
  • Persistent selection: Your customised city list is saved in localStorage and restored automatically when you return. No account or signup needed.

How Timezone Conversion Works

All timezone conversions in our world clock dashboard use the standard JavaScript Intl.DateTimeFormat API with the timeZone option, which leverages the browser's built-in IANA timezone database. This means the timezone data is as accurate as your operating system and browser, automatically accounting for Daylight Saving Time (DST) transitions in all regions that observe it. The UTC offset displayed on each card reflects the current offset including any DST adjustment. No external APIs or network requests are needed - everything is computed locally in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions About World Clock Dashboard

A world clock dashboard is a browser-based tool that displays the current time for multiple cities and timezones simultaneously. Each city card includes a live analog clock face, digital time display, date, UTC offset, and time difference from your local time. The entire dashboard updates every second in real-time and runs entirely in your browser with no server interaction.

All timezone conversions use the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API with the IANA timezone database, which is the same database used by operating systems and programming languages worldwide. The conversions are as accurate as your operating system and automatically account for Daylight Saving Time (DST) transitions in all regions that observe it.

Yes. Your city selection and ordering is automatically saved to your browser's localStorage. When you return to the world clock dashboard, your customised city list is restored exactly as you left it. This data never leaves your device and is cleared if you clear your browser data or use a different browser.

Click the "Add Timezone" button to open the search panel. You can browse timezones by region or type a city name, country name, or timezone ID in the search field. Click any matching entry to add it to your dashboard. The search covers all 40+ timezones in our database.

Hover over any city card to reveal the drag handle (left side) and remove button (top-right corner). Drag the card by its grip handle to reorder it. Click the X button to remove it. You must keep at least one city on the dashboard - the remove button is disabled when only one city remains.

Each city card shows a colour-coded badge indicating whether it is currently daytime (amber badge with yellow dot) or nighttime (indigo badge with blue dot) in that location. The analog clock face also switches between light and dark themes based on the local time of day in that city.

The time difference label shows how far ahead or behind each city is from your local time. For example, "5h ahead" means the city is 5 hours ahead of your current timezone. Cities in the same timezone as you show "Same time". The difference automatically accounts for DST in both locations.

Yes, the world clock dashboard is fully responsive and works on all modern mobile browsers. On smaller screens, city cards stack in a single column with the same real-time clock functionality. The analog clock faces render using canvas which is supported on all modern mobile browsers including iOS Safari and Chrome for Android.

There is no hard limit, but for practical purposes the dashboard performs best with up to 20-30 cities. Each city card includes a live analog clock rendered on a canvas element, and all updates happen every second. The number of cities is only constrained by your browser's performance - the dashboard handles 40+ cities smoothly on modern devices.
