Why Use Our Vocabulary Builder?

Curated Word Lists

Start with professionally curated vocabulary lists for SAT, GRE, TOEFL, and Business English. Each list contains 20-30 essential words with clear definitions and contextual example sentences. The SAT list covers high-frequency test words like "Aberration" and "Ubiquitous", while the GRE list focuses on advanced academic vocabulary including "Ephemeral" and "Pragmatic".

Three Study Modes

Study your words in three different ways. Flashcard mode lets you flip cards to test recall. Multiple choice mode presents the word with four possible definitions - pick the correct one. Type-the-definition mode challenges you to recall and type the meaning, with smart fuzzy matching that accepts partial correct answers. Switch modes anytime to keep your study sessions fresh.

Mastery Tracking & Progress

Track your learning journey with automatic mastery tracking. Words are marked as "mastered" after you answer correctly 3 times, moving them to a separate mastered list so you can focus on words that need more practice. Session statistics show correct/wrong counts per study session. A visual progress overview shows total words, mastered count, and words still in learning.

Custom Word Creation

Add your own vocabulary words with definitions and optional example sentences. Custom words are stored in a separate "Custom Words" list and are fully editable and deletable. This is perfect for studying class-specific vocabulary, technical terms for your industry, or foreign language words. All data persists in your browser's localStorage across sessions.

Common Use Cases

SAT & College Prep

High school students preparing for the SAT can use the dedicated SAT vocabulary list containing high-frequency test words like "Ambiguous", "Eloquent", and "Zealous". Study with all three modes to build strong word recall before test day. Track which words you have mastered (3 correct answers) and focus your study time on the words you haven't yet learned.

GRE & Graduate School Prep

Graduate school applicants can tackle advanced academic vocabulary with the GRE word list. Words like "Ephemeral", "Pragmatic", and "Sycophant" appear frequently on the GRE. The Type-the-definition mode is particularly effective for the GRE's text completion and sentence equivalence sections, where precise word knowledge is essential.

TOEFL & English Language Learners

English language learners preparing for the TOEFL can build essential academic vocabulary with the TOEFL word list. Words like "Comprehensive", "Consequently", and "Significant" are fundamental for academic reading and writing. The multiple choice mode provides contextual learning, while the example sentences show correct usage in academic contexts.

Business English for Professionals

Professionals looking to improve their business vocabulary can study the Business English list covering terms like "Acquisition", "Synergy", and "Stakeholder". These words are essential for meetings, presentations, and business correspondence. The flashcard mode is perfect for quick study sessions between meetings or during commutes.

Essay Writing & Academic Work

Students and academics can build a stronger vocabulary for essays, research papers, and dissertations. Add custom words from your field of study using the custom word feature. Study them across all three modes until they become part of your active vocabulary. The progress tracking helps ensure you are learning, not just memorising.

Classroom & Group Study

Teachers can recommend the Vocabulary Builder for classroom vocabulary assignments. Students add their weekly vocabulary words to the custom list and study using whichever mode works best for their learning style. The mastery tracking gives students a clear sense of progress, and the multiple choice mode simulates classroom quiz conditions.

About This Tool

What Is the Vocabulary Builder?

The Vocabulary Builder with Flashcards is an interactive study tool that helps you learn and retain new words. It combines four curated word lists (SAT, GRE, TOEFL, and Business English) with the ability to create your own custom vocabulary. Three study modes - flashcard, multiple choice, and type-the-definition - let you choose how you learn best. The tool automatically tracks which words you have mastered (answered correctly 3 times) and which need more practice.

How the Study Modes Work

Flashcard mode: see the word, tap to reveal the definition, then mark whether you knew it or not. Multiple choice mode: see the word and pick the correct definition from four shuffled options. Type-the-definition mode: see the word and type the definition from memory, with smart fuzzy matching that accepts partial correct answers. Each mode uses the same mastery tracking, so you can switch between them freely during your study sessions.

What Are the Built-in Word Lists?

The SAT list contains 30 high-frequency SAT vocabulary words including essential test words. The GRE list has 20 advanced academic words for graduate school preparation. The TOEFL list covers 20 fundamental academic words for English language learners. The Business English list contains 20 professional terms for workplace communication. Each word includes a clear definition and a contextual example sentence showing how the word is used in real situations.

Privacy & Data

The Vocabulary Builder runs entirely in your browser with no server communication. Your word lists, custom additions, mastery progress, and session history are stored in your browser's localStorage. No data is transmitted, stored, or accessible on any server. All features work offline after the initial page load. No account or signup is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Vocabulary Builder work?
Choose a word list (SAT, GRE, TOEFL, Business, or Custom Words), then start a study session. The tool presents words one at a time in your chosen study mode. In flashcard mode, you see the word and flip to reveal the definition. In multiple choice mode, you pick the correct definition from four options. In type-the-definition mode, you type the definition from memory. After answering correctly 3 times, a word is marked as "mastered" and moves to your mastered list.
What word lists are included?
The tool includes four built-in word lists: SAT Vocabulary (30 high-frequency test words), GRE Vocabulary (20 advanced academic words), TOEFL Vocabulary (20 essential academic words), and Business English (20 professional terms). Each word includes a clear definition and an example sentence. You can also add your own custom words to create a personalised vocabulary list.
What is the difference between the three study modes?
Flashcard mode lets you see the word, flip the card to reveal the definition, and self-assess whether you knew it. Multiple choice mode tests recognition by presenting four definitions to choose from. Type-the-definition mode challenges recall by asking you to type the meaning from memory, with smart fuzzy matching that accepts partial correct answers. Each mode tracks the same mastery progress, so you can switch modes freely.
How is "mastered" determined?
A word is marked as "mastered" after you answer it correctly 3 times across any study sessions. Each correct answer increments the word's correct count, and when it reaches 3, the word is moved to the mastered category. Mastered words are excluded from study sessions so you can focus on words that need more practice.
Can I add my own words?
Yes. Use the "Add Custom Word" form at the bottom of the tool to add your own vocabulary words with definitions and optional example sentences. Custom words appear in a separate "Custom Words" list and are fully editable and deletable. This is perfect for studying class vocabulary, technical terms, or foreign language vocabulary.
Is my progress saved if I close the browser?
Yes, all your data - word progress, custom words, and study history - is saved to your browser's localStorage. When you return to the tool, your progress will be exactly as you left it. Data persists across browser sessions on the same device and browser.
Can I reset my progress?
Yes. You can reset progress for an individual word list by clicking "Reset progress" below the word list. This resets all mastery status and correct/wrong counts for that list while keeping the words. You can also reset all data (including custom words) using the "Reset all data" option in the settings area.
Does this tool work offline?
Yes, after the initial page load, the Vocabulary Builder works completely offline. All features - word lists, study modes, mastery tracking, and custom words - run locally in your browser with no server communication required.
Are there any limits on how many words I can add?
There are no practical limits on the number of custom words you can add. However, browser localStorage typically has a 5-10 MB storage limit. Since each word is a small text entry, you can add hundreds of custom words before approaching this limit.
