Why Use Our Expiration Date Tracker?
Colour-Coded Expiration Status at a Glance
Every item gets an automatic colour-coded status - green (OK) means plenty of time before expiry, amber (Expiring Soon) means 14 days or less, and red (Expired) means past the expiration date. Each card shows the exact days remaining or days since expiry, so you always know what needs attention first without clicking through individual items.
Private - Saved Locally in Your Browser
Your expiration tracking data is saved to your browser's localStorage. No accounts, no signup, no server uploads - your item data never leaves your device. Track food, medicine, and product expirations with complete privacy. All data stays on your computer and is never transmitted to any server.
Smart Sorting, Filtering & Search
Sort items by expiry date (earliest or latest), name (A-Z or Z-A), or recently added. Filter by status (Expired, Expiring Soon, OK) and by category (Food, Medicine, Product, Other). Use the search bar to find specific items across all categories. Combined filters let you answer questions like "What food is expiring soon?" in one click.
Built-in Editing & Bulk Cleanup
Edit any item's name, category, expiry date, quantity, or notes after adding it - perfect for correcting a date or updating quantities. Delete individual items with a confirmation safeguard, or use the "Clear Expired" button to remove all expired items at once. Quick actions appear on hover for efficient management.
Common Use Cases for the Expiration Date Tracker
Kitchen Food Inventory
Track expiration dates of perishable and non-perishable food items in your kitchen. Add milk, eggs, yoghurt, fresh produce, canned goods, and pantry staples with their expiry dates. Check the "Expiring Soon" filter before your weekly grocery trip to see what needs to be used up, reducing food waste and saving money on replacing forgotten items.
Medicine & Supplement Management
Keep track of prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplement expiration dates. Set reminders to check your medicine cabinet - expired medications can lose potency or become harmful. Track multiple quantities for family members and sort by nearest expiry to plan refills before you run out of effective medicine.
Household Product Monitoring
Track expiration dates for household products like cleaning supplies, beauty products, sunscreen, cosmetics, and toiletries. Many household items have shorter shelf lives than expected - sunscreen expires after one season, and certain cleaning solutions lose effectiveness over time. The category filter lets you focus on Products separately from Food and Medicine.
Fridge & Freezer Audit
Perform regular fridge and freezer audits by logging all stored items with their expiration or freeze-by dates. Sort by expiry to see what needs to be eaten first (FIFO - First In, First Out). Use the search bar to check if you already have an ingredient before buying more at the store. Reduce food waste and save money by knowing exactly what you have.
First Aid Kit & Emergency Supplies
Track expiration dates for first aid kit contents - bandages, antiseptic wipes, burn cream, pain relievers, and emergency supplies. An expired first aid kit can fail when you need it most. Use the Medicine category filter to see all medical items at once, and sort by expiry to identify what needs replacing in your emergency kits at home, in your car, or at the office.
Bulk Purchase & Stockpile Management
If you buy in bulk from warehouse stores or stock up during sales, use the tracker to log all expiration dates. Track multiple quantities of the same item - for example, "3 bottles of ketchup" or "12 cans of soup" - each with their own date. The quantity field helps you track how many of each item you have. Sort by nearest expiry to plan your consumption order and prevent bulk savings from going to waste.
Understanding the Expiration Date Tracker
What Is the Expiration Date Tracker?
The Expiration Date Tracker is a free, browser-based tool that helps you monitor expiration dates for food, medicine, household products, and more. Add items with their names, categories, and expiry dates - the tool automatically calculates days remaining and assigns a colour-coded status: green for OK (more than 14 days), amber for Expiring Soon (14 days or less), and red for Expired. Sort, search, and filter to find exactly what needs attention. All data is saved to localStorage - no accounts, no signup, no server uploads.
How Our Expiration Date Tracker Works
- 1. Add an Item: Click the "Add Item" button to open the form. Enter the item name (e.g., "Milk", "Aspirin", "Sunscreen"), select a category (Food, Medicine, Product, or Other), pick the expiration date using the date picker, and optionally add a quantity and notes. Quantity is useful for tracking multiples ("3 bottles", "500g", "12 cans"). Notes can store brand information, storage location, or any additional details.
- 2. View Status at a Glance: Each item card shows a coloured dot indicator (green/amber/red), the expiration date in a readable format (e.g., "Jan 15, 2026"), and the exact days remaining or days since expiry. The status badge clearly labels each item as OK, Expiring Soon, or Expired. The stats cards at the top show your totals - how many items are OK, expiring soon, and expired.
- 3. Manage & Organise: Use the sort dropdown to order items by expiry date (earliest or latest), alphabetically, or by recently added. Use the filter buttons to focus on specific statuses (Expired, Expiring Soon, OK) or categories (Food, Medicine, Product, Other). The search bar finds items by name, category, or notes. Hover over any item to reveal edit and delete buttons - edit to correct details, delete with confirmation to remove.
- 4. Bulk Cleanup: When items expire, use the "Clear Expired" button to remove all expired items in one click. This keeps your list clean and focused on active items. The expired count in the stats cards lets you know at a glance how many items need attention.
Key Features of the Expiration Date Tracker
- Automatic Status Calculation:Days remaining and status (OK / Expiring Soon / Expired) are calculated automatically from today's date and the item's expiry date. No manual status updates needed.
- 4 Pre-Defined Categories: Food, Medicine, Product, and Other cover the most common expiration tracking needs. Each category has its own colour scheme for quick visual identification.
- Sort, Search & Filter:Sort by expiry date or name, search by keyword, filter by status or category. Combine filters to narrow down exactly what you need - e.g., "Food items expiring soon."
- localStorage Persistence:All items are saved to your browser's localStorage automatically. Close the tab and come back later - your items are still there. No accounts, no signup, no data sent to any server.
- Edit & Delete: Edit any item after adding it to correct a date or update details. Delete individual items with a confirmation step to prevent accidental removal. Clear all expired items at once with one button.
Important Notes on Expiration Date Tracking
Your data stays on your device:The Expiration Date Tracker saves your items to your browser's localStorage. This means your data stays on your device and is never transmitted to any server. However, clearing your browser data, using private/incognito mode, or switching browsers will remove your saved items. No account needed: Unlike subscription apps that require signup, our tool works immediately with no barriers. Status is relative to today:The days-remaining calculation and status badges use today's date. If you haven't opened the tool in a few days, items that were OK might now be Expiring Soon or Expired. The status updates automatically each time you visit. Use categories wisely: Separate your items into meaningful categories - Food for groceries, Medicine for pharmaceuticals, Product for household goods. This makes filtering more useful and helps you focus on what matters most.

Tracking expiration dates helps reduce food waste - the average household wastes hundreds of dollars per year on expired food. For medicine, expired medications can lose potency or become harmful. For household products, many lose effectiveness after their expiration date (sunscreen, cleaning solutions, cosmetics). Regular tracking also helps with meal planning, bulk buying decisions, and maintaining an organised kitchen, medicine cabinet, and pantry.
