Who Should Use Batch File Renaming?

Perfect for photographers, developers, content creators, and anyone dealing with large numbers of files that need consistent naming.

Photo & Image Organization

Rename DSC_001.jpg → vacation_italy_001.jpg for your photo albums. Add dates, locations, or project names to keep your image library organized and searchable.

Document Batch Processing

Rename hundreds of invoices, contracts, or reports from generic names (scan001.pdf) to meaningful names (invoice_acme_2024_001.pdf) in one go.

Video Content Management

Organize video files exported from editing software. Apply consistent naming with sequential numbering and project prefixes for your video library.

Audio File Organization

Clean up podcast episodes, music files, or audio recordings. Add episode numbers, standardize formats, and remove extra text from batch exported files.

Team File Sharing

Before sharing files with clients or team members, batch rename them to remove internal naming conventions and apply professional, consistent file names.

About the Batch File Renamer

Rename files in bulk with powerful pattern-based rules - all in your browser, no uploads, no signup.

How Batch Rename Patterns Work

Our batch file renamer applies rename rules in a specific order to give you predictable results. First, Find & Replace runs - it substitutes any matching text in the original file name. Second, Case conversion is applied. Third, Numbering is inserted (either before or after the name). Finally, Prefix and Suffix are added to the beginning and end of the name (before the extension). This order ensures consistent, predictable results every time.

Conflict Prevention

When renaming multiple files, duplicate names can cause files to overwrite each other. Our batch file renamer automatically detects naming conflicts before you download - highlighting them in red and preventing download until resolved. Simply adjust your prefix, numbering, or find/replace rules to make all names unique. Invalid characters in file names (like /, \, :, *, ?, ", <, >, |) are also flagged.

File Extensions Are Preserved

File extensions (like .jpg, .pdf, .docx) are critical for your operating system to know how to open files. Our batch file renamer automatically detects and preserves the extension of every file. Your rename rules only affect the base name - so a file called report.pdf stays a PDF even after renaming.

Privacy & Security First

Unlike online file renamers that upload your files to a server, our Batch File Renamer processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are read directly from your device, renamed in memory, and offered for download - they never travel over the network. This means no file size limits, no upload time, and zero privacy concerns. Your sensitive documents stay on your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about batch renaming files in your browser.

How does the Batch File Renamer work?
Upload your files, set rename rules (prefix, suffix, find & replace, numbering, case), see a live preview of all changes, then download the renamed files. All processing happens locally in your browser - no server uploads, no signup required.
Is my data safe when using this tool?
Absolutely. The Batch File Renamer processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your files are never uploaded to any server - they are read directly from your device, renamed in memory, and offered for download. No data leaves your computer.
What file types are supported?
All file types are supported - documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX), images (PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP), videos (MP4, MOV, AVI), audio (MP3, WAV, FLAC), code files (JS, TS, HTML, CSS, PY), and any other file format. The extension is automatically preserved.
What is the maximum number of files I can rename?
There is no hard limit. The practical limit depends on your device's available memory (RAM), since all files are loaded into memory for processing. Most modern devices can handle hundreds of files without issues. For very large files (500MB+), fewer files can be processed at once.
Why are some files highlighted in red?
Files highlighted in red have either a naming conflict (two files would end up with the same name) or invalid characters in the name. Operating systems do not allow characters like \, /, :, *, ?, ", <, >, or | in file names. Fix these issues by adjusting your rename rules before downloading.
How are the rename rules applied?
Rules are applied in this order: (1) Find & Replace - substitutes matching text in the original name, (2) Case conversion - changes letter casing, (3) Numbering - inserts sequential numbers before or after the name, (4) Prefix - adds text to the beginning of the name, (5) Suffix - adds text before the extension. File extensions are always preserved.
Can I UNDO a rename after downloading?
No - once the files are renamed and downloaded, the changes are permanent on your device (as with any file rename). Our tool provides a live preview so you can verify all changes before downloading. Double-check the preview table before clicking "Download All."
Is this Batch File Renamer completely free?
Yes - 100% free with no signup, no account, no usage limits, no premium tiers, and no hidden charges. Everything runs locally in your browser.
