About Pledge & Reward Fulfillment Costs
Understanding the true cost of reward fulfillment is critical for running a successful crowdfunding campaign.
How Platform & Processing Fees Work
Crowdfunding platforms charge fees that directly reduce your campaign revenue. Kickstarter and Indiegogo both charge a 5% platform fee on all funds raised. In addition, Stripe payment processing fees of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction are deducted from every pledge. This means for a $50 pledge, approximately $2.50 goes to the platform fee and $1.75 goes to Stripe processing, leaving $45.75 before any fulfillment costs. When you add production and shipping costs on top of these fees, the amount you actually receive can be significantly less than what backers pledge.
The True Cost of Reward Fulfillment
Reward fulfillment is often the largest and most underestimated expense in crowdfunding. Each pledge tier has three cost components: production or manufacturing costs (materials, labor, packaging), domestic shipping (within your home country), and international shipping (to backers abroad, which is typically 2-3x more expensive). Many first-time creators budget only for production costs and forget that shipping, especially international shipping, can consume 15-30% of gross revenue. A common rule of thumb is that fulfillment costs should not exceed 30-40% of the pledge amount for the campaign to remain financially viable.
Tier Profitability Analysis
Not all pledge tiers are equally profitable. Lower-priced tiers (e.g., $10 digital rewards) often have higher margins because they have no shipping or production costs. Mid-range tiers with physical products ($25-$100) typically have margins of 40-60% after fulfillment costs. Higher-priced tiers with complex physical products may have the lowest percentage margins but generate the most absolute profit per backer. Analyzing each tier's margin helps you decide which tiers to promote, which to restructure, and which price points need adjustment. The tier breakdown table in our calculator shows you exactly which tiers contribute the most to your net revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about pledge and reward fulfillment costs for crowdfunding campaigns.
Fulfillment costs vary widely by product type and complexity. Simple rewards like stickers or digital downloads cost $0-5 per backer. T-shirts and basic apparel typically cost $10-20 per unit including production and shipping. Complex products like electronics or custom hardware can cost $30-100+ per unit. International shipping adds $10-30 per package depending on destination and weight. A good rule of thumb is to budget fulfillment costs at 20-35% of the pledge amount for physical rewards, and always overestimate rather than underestimate.
Both Kickstarter and Indiegogo charge a 5% platform fee on all funds raised through your campaign. This fee is deducted from the total amount pledged before you receive your payout. In addition, Stripe payment processing fees apply (2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for US-issued cards, or approximately 4.4% + $0.30 for international cards). The combined effective fee rate typically ranges from 8-13%, depending on average pledge size. The $0.30 fixed fee means that campaigns with many small pledges pay a higher effective rate than those with fewer, larger pledges.
Net revenue is calculated as: Gross Pledge Revenue − Platform Fee − Processing Fee − Production Costs − Shipping Costs. The platform fee is a percentage of gross revenue (typically 5%). The processing fee is a percentage plus a fixed per-transaction fee on every pledge. Production costs are the per-unit manufacturing cost multiplied by the number of backers for each tier. Shipping costs include both domestic shipping (for backers in your home country) and international shipping (for backers abroad), calculated based on the percentage of international backers you specify for each tier.
A healthy crowdfunding campaign typically aims for a net margin (net revenue after all costs divided by gross revenue) of 15-30%. Margins below 10% suggest that fulfillment costs or fees are eating too much into revenue. Margins above 40% are excellent but rare for campaigns with physical rewards. Digital-only rewards can achieve margins of 70-85% since there are no production or shipping costs. If your calculated margin is below 10%, consider increasing pledge amounts, reducing production costs, or offering higher-priced tiers to improve overall profitability.
International shipping typically costs 2-3 times more than domestic shipping. For example, shipping a standard reward package within the US might cost $5-8, while shipping the same package to Europe or Asia could cost $15-25. Additionally, international shipments may incur customs fees, VAT/GST charges, and longer delivery times, which can lead to backer dissatisfaction. Many creators set international shipping prices as separate pledge tiers or add-ons to ensure international backers cover the higher cost. Our calculator lets you set different domestic and international shipping costs and specify the percentage of international backers per tier.
Most successful crowdfunding campaigns offer 3-6 pledge tiers. Having too few tiers limits your revenue potential by not catering to different budget levels. Having too many tiers can confuse backers and complicate fulfillment logistics. A typical tier structure includes: an early bird discount tier (limited quantity, lower price to drive early momentum), a standard tier (the main reward at full price), a deluxe tier (additional features or higher-quality materials), and a VIP/supporter tier (premium package with extras). Some campaigns also include a digital-only or "no reward" support tier for backers who just want to contribute.
For most successful crowdfunding campaigns, international backers make up 10-30% of total backers. Tech and gadget campaigns tend to have higher international percentages (20-40%), while locally-focused or content-based campaigns have lower percentages (5-15%). The percentage varies significantly by product category, campaign marketing reach, and shipping costs. It is important to model international backer percentages realistically, as international shipping costs are significantly higher and can have a substantial impact on your net revenue. Our calculator lets you set a different international percentage for each pledge tier.
