Mobile Wallet Fee Calculator

Mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay do not charge separate merchant fees. Instead, they use the underlying card network's contactless interchange rates. When a customer uses Apple Pay with their Visa card, the transaction processes at Visa's contactless card-present interchange rate - the same rate as if the physical card were tapped at the terminal. The total fee consists of three components: interchange (paid to the card-issuing bank),network fee (paid to Visa/Mastercard), and processor markup(your merchant services provider's fee). Mobile wallets typically don't add any fee on top of these standard components.

Enter a transaction amount and select the underlying card type. The calculator applies the appropriate interchange rate for that card type to each mobile wallet, adds the standard network assessment fee (0.10%), and the typical processor markup (0.20% for mobile wallets, 0.25% for traditional card-present). It also shows a traditional card-present (swipe/dip) comparison using the same card type. Results display the full fee stack breakdown, net amount received, effective rate, and the savings (or cost) compared to traditional processing.

The key difference between mobile wallet and traditional card-present fees is typically in the processor markup, not the interchange rate. Many processors offer slightly lower rates for mobile wallet transactions because digital wallets have lower fraud risk (biometric authentication, tokenization). Interchange rates for contactless transactions are the same whether the card is tapped physically or used through a digital wallet. The network assessment fee is also identical. Some processors may charge the same rate for both mobile wallet and traditional transactions - the savings shown in this calculator represent potential rather than guaranteed savings.

Mobile wallets offer significant security advantages that can justify lower processing costs. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay use tokenization - the actual card number is never shared with the merchant. Instead, a device-specific token is used for payment. This eliminates the risk of card data breaches at the merchant level and can reduce PCI compliance scope. The transaction is also authenticated using biometrics (Face ID, fingerprint) or device passcode, reducing the risk of fraudulent chargebacks. These security features are why some processors offer lower rates for mobile wallet transactions.
