Disclaimer:This calculator provides estimates based on common gift card fee structures. Actual fees vary by issuer, state regulations, card network, and specific card product. Some states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, etc.) prohibit monthly service fees on gift cards and have different dormancy rules. Open-loop cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) generally have more fees than closed-loop store cards. The CARD Act of 2009 regulates certain gift card fees at the federal level. All calculations are performed locally in your browser - no data is uploaded to any server. Always verify the specific fee schedule on your gift card packaging or issuer's website.

Features

4 Card Types Compared

Compare closed-loop store cards (Amazon, Target), open-loop Visa/Mastercard, Amex Gift Cards, and premium/select gift cards side by side. See which card type retains the most value over time.

Full Fee Breakdown

See every fee broken down: purchase fees, activation fees, monthly maintenance fees, and replacement fees. Visual stacked bar charts show exactly where your gift card value goes.

Drain Warning System

Know exactly when your gift card will reach zero. The calculator shows months until depletion, flags cards that have been completely drained, and visualizes the fee timeline with inactivity and fee periods.

Free & Private

All calculations run entirely in your browser. Your gift card amounts and fee data are never sent to any server. No signup required, no data stored.

Use Cases

Holiday & Birthday Gift Planning

Before buying gift cards for friends and family, compare card types to find the one with the lowest fees. Store-specific gift cards typically have zero fees, while open-loop cards can lose 5-10% of value to purchase fees alone.

Corporate Gift Card Programs

Businesses buying gift cards in bulk for employee rewards or customer incentives need to understand fee structures. A $5 purchase fee on 1,000 cards adds $5,000 in unnecessary costs. Use this calculator to estimate total fee impact.

Forgotten Gift Card Recovery

Found an old gift card in a drawer? Enter the original value and time since purchase to see how much (if anything) remains after fees. Many open-loop cards drain to zero within 2-3 years of inactivity.

Gift Card Fee Compliance & Auditing

Nonprofits and businesses tracking gift card liabilities need to account for fee erosion. This calculator helps estimate the net realizable value of gift card inventory after accounting for various fee structures.

Personal Finance Optimization

Deciding between a store-specific gift card and a prepaid Visa for budgeting? Compare the fee impact to choose the most cost-effective option. Store cards are almost always cheaper if you shop at that retailer.

Rewards & Incentive Program Design

Designing an incentive program? Compare the true cost of offering different gift card types. Understand how monthly fees and dormancy periods affect the net value recipients actually receive.

About Gift Card Fees

What Types of Gift Card Fees Exist?

Gift cards can have several types of fees. Purchase fees (also called issuance fees) are charged at the time of buying the card, typically $2-$7 for open-loop cards. Monthly maintenance fees are deducted from the balance after a period of inactivity (usually 6-12 months). Activation fees may be charged at purchase on some premium cards. Replacement fees apply if you lose your card and need a new one. Closed-loop store gift cards generally have none of these fees, while open-loop network-branded cards often have multiple fee layers.

How the Fee Calculation Works

Enter the gift card's original face value and how many months have passed since activation. The calculator first deducts any upfront fees (purchase fee + activation fee) from the initial value. Then, for each month beyond the inactivity grace period, it deducts the monthly maintenance fee. The result shows your remaining balance, total fees paid, and the percentage of value lost to fees. It also calculates how many months until the balance reaches zero - critical information for understanding whether a long-held card still has value.

Closed-Loop vs Open-Loop Gift Cards

Closed-loop gift cards (also called merchant-specific) can only be used at a single retailer or brand. Examples include Amazon, Starbucks, Target, and Walmart gift cards. They typically have zero fees - no purchase fee, no monthly fees, and no expiration (in most states). Open-loop gift cards carry a network brand (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and can be used anywhere that brand is accepted. These cards almost always have purchase fees ($3-$7), monthly maintenance fees ($2-$3 after 6 months of inactivity), and sometimes activation fees. The trade-off is spending flexibility.

Consumer Protection Laws

The federal CARD Act of 2009regulates gift card fees. It prohibits fees on gift cards that expire within five years and limits dormancy fees to cards with at least 12 months of inactivity. However, the CARD Act only applies to consumer gift cards - not prepaid cards that are marketed as reloadable or payroll cards. Additionally, many states have stronger protections. California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, and others prohibit monthly service fees entirely. Always check your state's specific gift card regulations, as fee treatment varies significantly by jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

A gift card fee calculator estimates how much of your gift card value remains after accounting for various fees. By entering the original card value, card type, and time since activation, it calculates the remaining balance, total fees paid, and how long until the card is completely drained by monthly maintenance charges.

Open-loop gift cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) work on payment networks that charge the issuer interchange fees and network fees. To cover these costs, issuers charge purchase fees ($3-$7) and monthly maintenance fees ($2-$3). Closed-loop store gift cards only work within a single retailer's payment system, which has minimal processing costs, so there are typically no fees. The trade-off is that open-loop cards offer the flexibility to spend anywhere.

It depends on the card type and initial value. A $100 open-loop Visa with a $4.95 purchase fee starts at $95.05. After the 6-month inactivity grace period, monthly fees of $2.50 kick in. The card would reach zero in about 44 months (3.7 years). A $100 store gift card with no fees would never lose value. Larger values last longer, but the same fee structure applies proportionally.

Yes. The best way to avoid monthly maintenance fees is to use the card within the inactivity grace period (usually 6-12 months) and avoid holding onto the card for long periods. Once you receive an open-loop gift card, spend it within the first few months. Alternatively, choose closed-loop store gift cards which typically have no monthly fees at all. Remember that the CARD Act requires 12 months of inactivity before monthly fees can start on most consumer gift cards.

Closed-loop (store-specific) gift cards have the lowest fees - typically zero. Amazon, Target, Starbucks, Walmart, and most major retailer gift cards have no purchase fees, no monthly fees, and no expiration dates. Bank-issued gift cards from major banks (like Chase, Bank of America) may have moderate fees. Prepaid cards marketed as "reloadable" have different fee structures and may not qualify for the same consumer protections as one-time gift cards.

The federal CARD Act of 2009 prohibits certain gift card fees. Dormancy fees (monthly fees after inactivity) are only allowed if there has been at least 12 months of inactivity. Fees on the card purchase itself are generally allowed but must be clearly disclosed. Several states have stronger protections that go beyond federal law. For example, California, Colorado, and Connecticut prohibit monthly maintenance fees entirely. New York and Texas require clear disclosure of all fees on the card packaging.
