About CPM Revenue Calculations
What Is CPM?
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille (thousand) impressions. It represents how much an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad impressions on your website or platform. If your CPM is $5.00, you earn $5.00 for every 1,000 times an ad is displayed to visitors. CPM is the most common pricing model in display advertising and is used by all major ad networks including Google AdSense, AdX, Media.net, and premium managed networks like Mediavine and AdThrive.
Gross vs Net Revenue
Gross revenue is the total amount earned before any deductions. Net revenue is what you actually receive after the ad network takes its revenue share. For example, Google AdSense typically retains ~32% of ad revenue as their fee, meaning you keep ~68%. This calculator shows both gross and net figures so you can understand the true impact of network fees on your earnings.
Effective CPM Explained
Effective CPM (eCPM) is your actual earnings per 1,000 impressions after accounting for all factors including network fees, fill rate, and viewability. While the negotiated CPM might be $5.00, your eCPM could be lower due to fees and unmonetized impressions. The calculator shows your effective CPM after fees so you can compare network performance accurately.
Batch Mode & Scenario Planning
The batch comparison mode lets you model multiple CPM scenarios at once - for example, comparing $2, $5, and $10 CPM at 100K, 500K, and 1M impressions. This is useful for revenue forecasting, setting ad pricing floors, and understanding how traffic growth combined with CPM improvements amplifies your earnings.
