What is an Image Reflection Effect?
An image reflection effect creates a mirror-like copy of an image below the original, often with a fade or gradient that makes it appear as if the image is sitting on a reflective surface. This technique is famously used by Apple for product photography and has become a standard in premium visual design.
How the Reflection Effect Works
The reflection is created by flipping a copy of the image vertically and placing it below the original with a configurable gap. A gradient overlay fades the reflection from the top (most visible) to the bottom (fully transparent), creating a realistic mirror effect. Additional controls like blur and opacity fine-tune the realism.
Best Practices for Reflections
For the most realistic results, keep the reflection height between 30-60% of the original image. Use a subtle fade (70-90%) so the reflection appears natural. Add a small gap (2-8px) for a floating effect. Use a matching background color that blends with your page design. Avoid excessive blur unless going for a frosted glass effect.
Reflection vs Drop Shadow
While both add depth, they create different effects. A reflection simulates a mirrored surface below the image and works best for product photography and premium presentations. A drop shadow creates a shadow cast on the background behind the image, which works better for UI elements and cards. Use reflections for hero images and product shots; use shadows for interface elements.
Image Border / Frame Adder
Add custom borders or decorative frames to images with adjustable colour, width, and style.
Image Color Overlay
Apply a colour overlay to any image with adjustable opacity and blend mode.
Duotone Image Generator

Rounded Corners Image Tool
Add rounded corners to images with per-corner radius control and transparent PNG output.
An image reflection effect creates a mirror-like copy of your image below the original, with a fading gradient that simulates a reflective surface. It's commonly used in product photography (like Apple's product pages), app mockups, and premium design presentations to add depth and polish.
Click the Download PNG button to save the result as a transparent PNG file. You can then use it directly in your website, presentation, social media post, or marketing material. The file includes both the original image and its reflection combined on a single canvas.
You can upload any common image format: PNG, JPG/JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and TIFF. For best results, use high-resolution images with transparent backgrounds (PNG). The tool works with any image that your browser can display.
For realistic reflections: set Reflection Height to 40-60%, Opacity to 30-40%, and Fade Amount to 70-85%. Use a small gap (0-4px) and match the background color to your page. The Classic preset is a great starting point, then fine-tune each setting based on your specific image and design context.
Horizontal flip mirrors the original image left-to-right before creating the reflection. This is useful when you want the reflection to show a different angle or when creating split-screen effects. When flipped, both the main image and its reflection are mirrored together.
Yes! Use the Gap slider to add space between the bottom of the image and the top of the reflection. A gap of 10-30px creates a nice floating effect, as if the image is hovering above a reflective surface. The Floating preset uses a 20px gap for this exact effect.
Yes! When you upload a PNG with transparency, the tool preserves the transparency of the original image. However, the reflection itself is rendered on the background color you choose. For transparent-background reflections, enable "Show background" and set a matching background color, or disable it for a fully transparent result.
Since all processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device's available memory. Most modern devices can handle images up to 4000×4000px without issues. For very large images (e.g., 8000×8000px+), you may experience slower rendering. The tool will work with any file size your browser can load.
