Understanding Random Color Palettes
What is a Random Color Palette?
A random colour palette is a set of 5 colours generated randomly but guided by colour harmony principles to ensure the result is visually balanced and usable. Unlike purely random colour selection (which often produces clashing combinations), our random colour palette generator uses six harmony modes - Analogous, Complementary, Triadic, Tetradic, Monochromatic, and Pure Random - to create palettes that are both surprising and aesthetically pleasing.
How Our Random Color Palette Generator Works
- Choose a harmony mode: Select from six harmony rules that determine how the colours in the palette relate to each other. Each mode produces a different visual feel - from the cohesive tones of monochromatic to the vibrant contrast of complementary.
- Generate and refine:Click “Generate” to create a new palette. Lock any colours you like by clicking the lock icon on the swatch, then regenerate to replace only the unlocked colours while keeping your favourites fixed.
- Export your palette: Copy the palette as CSS custom properties (CSS variables) for direct use in stylesheets, as JSON for design tokens, or download as a PNG image for presentations and moodboards.
Harmony Modes Explained
- Analogous: Colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel. Creates harmonious, natural-looking palettes perfect for serene designs.
- Complementary: Based on colours opposite each other on the colour wheel. Produces high-contrast, vibrant palettes with a base and its complement.
- Triadic: Three evenly spaced colours (120° apart) with two transitional hues. Creates balanced, rich palettes with strong visual interest.
- Tetradic (Rectangle): Four colours spaced at 90° intervals with one transitional colour. Complex, diverse palettes suitable for detailed designs.
- Monochromatic: A single hue with varying lightness and saturation. Creates elegant, cohesive palettes that are easy to work with.
- Random: Fully random hue, saturation, and lightness for each colour. The most surprising results, though not always harmonious.
How to Use Exported Palettes
CSS Variables export produces --palette-1 through --palette-5 for direct use in your stylesheet: background-color: var(--palette-1). JSON export outputs each colour with its HEX, RGB, and HSL values for use in design token systems, Tailwind configs, or JavaScript themes. PNG download creates a 600×200 pixel image with the 5 colours in a horizontal strip - perfect for moodboards, client presentations, and portfolio documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Random Color Palette Generator
A random colour palette generator creates sets of 5 colours that are visually balanced and harmonious, using colour theory principles. Unlike picking colours at random (which often produces clashing combinations), our generator uses harmony modes - analogous, complementary, triadic, tetradic, monochromatic, and random - to ensure the results are aesthetically pleasing and usable in real design projects.
Select a harmony mode from the options (Analogous, Complementary, Triadic, Tetradic, Monochromatic, or Random), then click "Generate" to create a new palette. Lock any colours you like by clicking the lock icon on the swatch, then regenerate to replace only the unlocked colours. Export the palette as CSS variables, JSON, or download as a PNG image.
Analogous uses colours adjacent on the colour wheel (harmonious and natural). Complementary pairs opposite colours (high contrast and vibrant). Triadic uses three evenly spaced colours (balanced and rich). Tetradic uses four colours at 90° intervals (complex and diverse). Monochromatic varies lightness of a single hue (elegant and cohesive). Random picks fully random values (surprising but less predictable).
Yes! Click the lock icon on any colour swatch to lock it in place. When you click "Generate" again, only the unlocked colours will change. This lets you explore different colour combinations while keeping your favourite colours fixed - perfect for iterative palette design.
