Why Use Our SQL Beautifier?
Intelligent SQL Formatting
Format any SQL query with proper indentation, consistent keyword capitalization, and logical clause alignment. The beautifier handles SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, ALTER, and all major SQL statements. Complex nested subqueries, CTEs, JOINs, and UNIONs are formatted with clear visual hierarchy.
Multi-Dialect Support
Supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, SQL Server, Oracle, and BigQuery syntax. Dialect-specific keywords and functions are recognized and capitalized correctly. Window functions, array operations, JSON operators, and dialect-specific data types are all handled properly.
Column Alignment & Readability
Align columns, values, and conditions in clean vertical lists. SELECT columns are one per line with consistent spacing. WHERE conditions align on AND/OR operators. INSERT values line up with column names. JOIN conditions are vertically aligned for maximum readability.
Configurable Output Options
Toggle keyword case (UPPER or lower), choose indentation style (2 or 4 spaces), and control comma placement (leading or trailing). Convert between compact and expanded formats. All processing happens locally in your browser with instant feedback.
Common Use Cases for SQL Beautifier
Code Review & Team Collaboration
Developers use the beautifier to normalize SQL formatting before code reviews. Consistent formatting makes it easier to spot logic errors, missing JOIN conditions, and performance issues. Team members spend less time arguing over formatting conventions and more time reviewing actual query logic.
Debugging & Query Analysis
When debugging complex SQL queries, a beautified format reveals the logical structure at a glance. Nested subqueries become visually distinct, JOIN chains are clearly separated, and WHERE clause logic is easier to trace. This makes finding missing parentheses or incorrect conditions much faster.
Refactoring Legacy SQL
Database administrators refactor legacy SQL code that has accumulated inconsistent formatting over years. The beautifier normalizes thousands of lines of SQL with consistent capitalization, spacing, and indentation, making it possible to understand and modernize old database code.
Learning & Documentation
Students learning SQL and authors writing SQL documentation use the beautifier to produce clean, readable example queries. Well-formatted SQL helps learners understand query structure, clause ordering, and proper syntax through clear visual patterns rather than dense walls of text.
Migration & ETL Pipeline Maintenance
Data engineers working on migration projects or ETL pipelines need to review and modify large SQL scripts extracted from legacy systems. The beautifier makes these scripts readable, revealing the actual data transformation logic hidden behind inconsistent formatting.
ORM Query Debugging
Developers using ORMs like ActiveRecord, Hibernate, or SQLAlchemy often need to inspect the SQL queries generated by the framework. Pasting these auto-generated queries into the beautifier makes them readable and helps identify N+1 problems, missing indexes, or inefficient join strategies.
Understanding SQL Formatting & Beautification
What is SQL Beautification?
SQL beautification is the process of reformatting raw, minified, or inconsistently formatted SQL code into a clean, readable, and standardized form. Raw SQL queries - especially those generated by ORMs, extracted from logs, or written by multiple developers over time - often lack consistent indentation, have mixed keyword casing, and pack complex logic into dense, unreadable lines. A SQL beautifier applies consistent rules for keyword capitalization (SELECT, FROM, WHERE), clause indentation (each major clause on its own line with logical sub-clauses indented),column alignment (one column per line with aligned commas), andstatement spacing (blank lines between separate statements and around subqueries). The result is SQL that reveals its logical structure at a glance.
How the SQL Beautifier Works
- Tokenization - The SQL input is broken into tokens: keywords, identifiers, operators, string literals, numbers, and punctuation. The tokenizer handles quoted identifiers, string escapes, comments (single-line and multi-line), and dialect-specific operators like PostgreSQL's
->and->>or MySQL's backtick quoting. - Clause Detection - SQL keywords are classified into clause starters (SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY, ORDER BY, HAVING, LIMIT), sub-starters (AND, OR, ON), and other tokens. The parser tracks nesting depth for parentheses, subqueries, and CASE expressions.
- Reformatting - Based on the token classification, line breaks and indentation are inserted: each major clause starts on a new line at the base indent, comma-separated lists are expanded to one per line, parenthesized subqueries are indented, and JOIN conditions are formatted with ON alignments.
- Keyword Case & Spacing - All recognized SQL keywords are converted to the selected case (UPPER or lower). Extra whitespace is collapsed to single spaces. Commas are moved to the leading or trailing position based on preferences. Comments are preserved with their original formatting.
Formatting Rules & Conventions
- Keyword Capitalization: All SQL keywords are converted to either UPPERCASE (SELECT, FROM, WHERE) or lowercase based on user preference. This makes the structural elements of the query visually distinct from identifiers like table and column names.
- Clause Indentation: Each major clause begins on a new line. SELECT columns are indented 4 spaces from the SELECT keyword when they span multiple lines. WHERE, AND, OR conditions are indented to align with each other. Subqueries in parentheses receive an additional indentation level.
- Column & Value Alignment: Columns in SELECT lists, values in INSERT statements, and conditions in WHERE clauses are formatted one per line when they exceed the specified width. Commas can be placed at the start of the line (leading) or end (trailing) based on preference.
- JOIN & ON Formatting: Each JOIN clause starts on a new line. The ON condition is indented below its JOIN keyword. Multiple ON conditions connected by AND are split across lines with proper alignment. LEFT, RIGHT, INNER, and CROSS JOIN variants are all handled.
- Complex Expression Handling: CASE expressions are formatted with WHEN, THEN, ELSE, and END on separate lines. Window functions (OVER, PARTITION BY, ORDER BY within OVER) receive special formatting. CTEs (WITH clause) have each CTE on its own line with comma separators.
Privacy & Security
This tool runs entirely in your browser using client-side JavaScript. Your SQL queries, database schema information, and reformatted output are never uploaded to any server, stored in any database, or transmitted over the network. All tokenization, parsing, clause detection, keyword capitalization, indentation, and reformatting execute locally on your device. There are no API calls, analytics tracking, cookies, or data collection of any kind. This makes it completely safe for formatting SQL from proprietary databases, confidential analytics, or production queries containing sensitive business data.
Frequently Asked Questions About SQL Beautifier
The beautifier supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Microsoft SQL Server (T-SQL), Oracle PL/SQL, and Google BigQuery. It recognizes dialect-specific keywords, functions, data types, and operators for each. Window functions, CTEs, JSON operators, array functions, and other advanced features are handled correctly across all supported dialects.
Yes. The beautifier recursively formats nested subqueries, common table expressions (CTEs with WITH clauses), derived tables in FROM clauses, and subqueries in WHERE/HAVING conditions. Each level of nesting receives proper indentation to make the query structure visually clear. Correlated subqueries and lateral joins are also supported.
No. The beautifier only modifies whitespace, indentation, keyword capitalization, and line breaks. It does not change any identifiers, string literals, numbers, operators, or the structural order of clauses. The formatted SQL executes identically to the original input. However, check that string literals with intentional spacing are preserved.
