Steganography Tool - Hide Text in Image

Hide secret text messages inside PNG images using LSB steganography with our free steganography tool. Upload a PNG, type your message, and download an encoded image that looks identical to the original. Extract hidden messages from encoded images with optional password protection. All steganography processing runs locally in your browser - no signup required.

Steganography Tool - Hide Text in Image

Embed a secret text message into a PNG image using LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography, or extract a previously hidden message. Optionally protect the message with a password. All processing runs locally in your browser - your images and messages never leave your device.

How LSB Steganography Works:
  • Each pixel's red channel value is modified by 1 at most - visually imperceptible to the human eye
  • PNG only - JPEG compression destroys hidden data; always save and share as PNG
  • Capacity: approximately 1 byte per 8 pixels (a 1920×1080 image can hide ~259 KB of text)
  • The optional password applies XOR encryption to the message bytes before embedding - without the correct password, the extracted text will be garbled

Why Use Our Steganography Tool?

Instant Steganography - Hide Text in Image

Embed secret messages into PNG images instantly in your browser using LSB steganography. Our steganography tool processes images in milliseconds - the encoded image looks identical to the original with no visible changes.

Secure Steganography Tool Online

All steganography encoding and decoding happens locally in your browser. Your images and secret messages never leave your device, ensuring 100% privacy every time you use our steganography tool online.

Steganography Tool - No Installation

Use our steganography tool directly in any browser with no downloads, plugins, or software required. Hide and reveal text in images from any device - desktop, tablet, or mobile - instantly.

Optional Password Protection

Add an optional password to XOR-encrypt the hidden message before embedding it. Without the correct password, anyone who extracts the data will see garbled text - adding a second layer of protection beyond steganography alone.

Common Use Cases for Steganography Tool

Covert Communication

Share secret messages hidden inside ordinary-looking images on social media, email, or messaging apps. Our steganography tool embeds text invisibly - only recipients who know to look and have the password can extract the message.

Digital Watermarking

Embed invisible ownership information, copyright notices, or author metadata into images before publishing. Use our steganography tool to prove ownership of an image by extracting the hidden watermark later.

Security Research and Education

Demonstrate LSB steganography techniques in cybersecurity courses, CTF challenges, and penetration testing labs. Our steganography tool provides a clean, browser-based implementation for hands-on learning.

CTF (Capture the Flag) Challenges

Create and solve steganography-based CTF challenges. Use our tool to embed flags or clues inside PNG images for participants to discover, or to extract hidden data from challenge images.

Private Note Storage

Store sensitive notes, credentials, or private information hidden inside an image file with password protection. The image can be stored or shared publicly without revealing that it contains hidden data.

Proof of Concept and Demonstrations

Demonstrate the concept of information hiding to clients, students, or colleagues. Our steganography tool makes it easy to show how data can be concealed in plain sight within digital images.

Understanding Steganography - Hiding Text in Images

What is Steganography?

Steganography is the practice of hiding secret information inside an ordinary, non-secret file or message so that the existence of the hidden data is concealed. Unlike encryption - which makes data unreadable - steganography makes data invisible. Our steganography tool uses LSB (Least Significant Bit) steganography: it modifies the least significant bit of the red channel of each pixel to encode message bits. Because the human eye cannot perceive a change of 1 in a color value ranging from 0 to 255, the encoded image looks completely identical to the original. The technique works exclusively with PNG images because PNG uses lossless compression - JPEG compression would destroy the hidden bits.

How Our Steganography Tool Works

  1. Upload a PNG Image: Select any PNG image as the carrier. Larger images have more capacity - a 1920×1080 PNG can hide approximately 259 KB of text. The tool accepts any PNG regardless of content or size.
  2. Enter Your Message and Optional Password: Type the secret message you want to hide. Optionally add a password - this XOR-encrypts the message bytes before embedding, so anyone who extracts the data without the password will see garbled text. All processing runs entirely in your browser.
  3. Download the Encoded PNG: Click Hide Message in Image and download the resulting PNG. The encoded image is visually identical to the original. Share it normally - only someone using our steganography tool with the correct password can extract the hidden message.

What the Steganography Tool Embeds

  • Magic Header (4 bytes): A fixed identifier embedded at the start so the decoder can verify the image was encoded with this tool and reject unencoded images gracefully.
  • Message Length (4 bytes): The byte length of the message stored as a big-endian 32-bit integer, allowing the decoder to read exactly the right number of bytes.
  • Message Bytes (variable): The UTF-8 encoded message bytes, optionally XOR-encrypted with a key derived from the password, embedded one bit per pixel in the red channel LSB.
  • Pixel Modification:Each pixel's red value changes by at most 1 (e.g., 128 → 129 or 128 → 128), which is completely imperceptible to the human eye and undetectable by casual inspection.

Important Limitations of LSB Steganography

LSB steganography is not a substitute for encryption. While the hidden message is invisible to casual observers, dedicated steganalysis tools can detect statistical anomalies in pixel LSBs. For truly sensitive data, combine steganography with strong encryption - use the password option to XOR-encrypt the message, or encrypt your message with AES before hiding it. Additionally, always save and share the encoded image as PNG - converting to JPEG will destroy the hidden data because JPEG uses lossy compression that alters pixel values.

Frequently Asked Questions About Steganography Tool

A steganography tool hides secret information inside an ordinary file - in this case, text inside a PNG image - so the existence of the hidden data is concealed. Our steganography tool uses LSB (Least Significant Bit) encoding to embed text invisibly into pixel data. It runs entirely in your browser with no signup required.

No. LSB steganography modifies each pixel's red channel value by at most 1 out of 255, which is completely imperceptible to the human eye. The encoded image looks identical to the original. Only someone using a steganography decoder tool - and the correct password if one was set - can extract the hidden message.

Absolutely. All steganography encoding and decoding happens locally in your browser using JavaScript and the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images and secret messages are never sent to any server, stored, or logged. Your data stays completely private on your device.

Yes - our steganography tool is 100% free with no signup, no account, and no usage limits. Hide and reveal text in images as many times as you need, completely free forever.

PNG uses lossless compression, which preserves every pixel value exactly. JPEG uses lossy compression that rounds and alters pixel values during compression, which would destroy the hidden LSB data. Always save and share the encoded image as PNG - never convert it to JPEG after encoding.

The capacity is approximately 1 byte per 8 pixels. A 1920×1080 image has about 2 million pixels, allowing roughly 259 KB of text. A 640×480 image can hold about 38 KB. The tool will show an error if your message is too long for the selected image.

The optional password XOR-encrypts the message bytes using a key derived from the password before embedding them. Without the correct password, anyone who extracts the data will see garbled, unreadable text. The password adds a second layer of protection beyond the steganography itself.

LSB steganography can be detected by dedicated steganalysis tools that analyze statistical patterns in pixel LSBs. For casual observers and standard image viewers, the hidden data is completely invisible. If you need undetectable steganography, combine it with encryption and use images with natural noise (photos rather than flat-color graphics).

Yes, if the challenge uses the same LSB-in-red-channel encoding format with the STEG magic header. For other steganography formats (LSB in all channels, blue channel, different bit positions), you would need a tool specific to that encoding. Our tool is best for creating and solving challenges that use this specific implementation.
